Friday Is National Donut Day

IMMD!     Sent to you by tony via Google Reader:     Friday Is National Donut Day via Hybla Valley Patch: Latest Articles by Mary Ann Barton on 6/2/11 Lek Falke is behind the counter at the Krispy Kreme off of Route 1 in Alexandria, ringing up a cup of coffee and a donut (a hot-off-the presses Original Glazed, their most popular) for one of her regular customers. It's a quiet day, with just a few customers coming and going. She knows that on Friday, it might not be so quiet. What's Friday? National Donut Day. It has its roots in the trenches of World War I, when war-weary soldiers would take a break by stopping by a "hut" a makeshift coffee shop, where "lassies" doled out coffee and donuts. In 1938, the Salvation Army in Chicago wanted to recognize those women's efforts and started National Donut Day, which falls on the first Friday in June each year. Nowadays, National Donut Day efforts in some cities include fundraisers associated with th...

Rolling Cabin Fever

Last Monday, I got a call from my sister. Hey, you wanna go see Granny this weekend? I'm at work so I ask her to call me back in 20. I then silently mull over my plans for the weekend--none. My checking account? Okay. I get paid the Friday they want to leave so I have a little spending money. My sanity? Check please! I've never been the type of guy that would be considered "straight & narrow"; sometimes my own thought process makes me sit back and ask, WTF??? There's a reason for this mini-impromptu self-assessment. Most of my grannies live within a five to ten minute drive from my house. So, when my sister asks the question: "hey, you wanna go see Granny this weekend?", she could only be talking about one Granny, Grandma Dorothy...who lives in Savannah, GA. The most preferred form of transportation in our family is the car. This revelation leads to two words which don't scare me when used separately. Together, they're two of the most frighte...

St. Paddy's Day...

...was pretty uneventful. Didn't do nearly the amount of drinking that I thought I'd do, I guess that's a good thing. Still, it was St. Paddy's Day, so we ("we" being me and the group of functional alkies I drink with; my ex co-workers) made the most of it!!! We had a few drinks, socialized, strengthened our bonds of friendship and camaraderie by telling gross or dirty anecdotes, drank, made clumsy advances at women, drank, pranked each other, swore loudly, drank, watched various sporting events, drank, giggled at the hot red-head with curls who had butterflies at the top of her thong and a tee-shirt that read "Erin Go Braugh-Less", ordered food, argued about work, made more clumsy advances at women and drank. By the end of the night, I was little disappointed. It was a typical happy hour. http://www.googlefight.com/
