Black Friday

I couldn't bring myself to do it; there was no way in hell I was gonna go out into that mass of human misery called "Black Friday" and conduct my holiday shopping. I love Christmas, but man do I hate the shopping!!! Tis the season to get your family members everything they've been longing for for the last 12 months...by any means necessary!!! I know, I used to work retail; it's never a pretty sight. Whatever happened to "seasons greetings" or "tis the season to be jolly" or "peace and goodwill to all mankind"??? Seems like within the last several years, that's been replaced by long lines of moody, whiny, pushy people who wouldn't hesitate to push you down to the ground for the last stack of Yu-gi-oh playing cards or the last copy of "Halo 2". Things aren't as bad as they used to be; thanks to online shopping, you can avoid any and all contact w/rude procrastinators who've waited until the last moment to buy that special gift for their loved one and can only see the look on said loved one's face as they cut you off on the highway to get to Best Buy before closing time. But, that doesn't stop these people. They will undoubtedly find someway to make someone in retail miserable just so their loved one's won't be. Never mind the other 364 days out of the year they could've enhanced and enriched the life of a loved one. No, no, no, no. All of that pales in comparison to this one day that carries so much weight that if someone were to fail in their gift giving they must be shunned and marked w/a scarlet "G" for all to see...

SmarTrip Users Can Now Reload at CVS & Giant

Excellent!     Sent to you by tony via Google Reader:     SmarTrip Users Can Now Reload at CVS & Giant via DCist by Sommer Mathis on 6/16/09 Metro formally announced today that SmarTrip users can add value to their cards at select CVS and Giant Food stores . Last year, WMATA made SmarTrip cards more widely available for sale at CVS and Giant , but now customers can also choose to add money to their cards at both chains while they check out. Many CVS stores actually began offering customers the ability to reload their SmarTrip cards back in April, while Giant has only started to test the sales devices at eight area stores. The grocer will likely add 42 more locations later this summer. Not every CVS or Giant has the new SmarTrip reload technology, but a lot of them do. Consult the list of participating stores to find the one closest to you. The change means that SmarTrip users need no longer necessarily wait in line to access Metro's machines insi...

Shoveling. Snow. Saints!

The last eight days have truly been the stuff of legends!  First, the snow on Friday!  As many of you know, I was born and raised in Alexandria, VA.  Aside from the four years that I served in the Army, I've spent roughly 32 years of my life in the familiar surroundings of traffic, traffic and more traffic.  That being said, I have NEVER EVER seen anything like this.  One could make the argument that there was the blizzard of '96...but I was still in Georgia at the time so technically, this is a first for me.  I gotta say, I love snow.  Not the shoveling, but the sound of snow falling; so quiet, so serene.  Truly a thing a beauty...and the fact that I missed several days of work because of it doesn't hurt.  I also didn't miss the fact that we lost approximately 20 hours of power in the first 48 hours of said snow storm.  Honestly, I didn't mind it so much.  We lost power at 10PM which conveniently became bed time!  You'd be amazed at how tired you suddenly feel...

Ma'am I'm not a hero, I'm just doing my job!

I wrote this in response to a friend who posted a blog entry about heroes a few days ago: When I was a young boy, my aunt would let me and my sister go to 7-Eleven; it was one of the few areas we were allowed to go by ourselves. Generally, I was there for a Slurpee, but once a week, something magical would happen: the 7-Eleven would receive new comics!!! Oh joy! New comics! Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, the Hulk, Captain America, the X-Men and my favorite, Spider-Man. Yes, for the longest, he's been one of my favorites to read and even though I don't buy comics anymore (are you kidding me, look at the price tag?!?) I still casually read it when I'm in my favorite bookstore and occasional, I'll buy graphic novels. He's been my favorite for several main reasons: 1-He's like me. Oh sure, he was a teenager by the time I started reading but I understood what it was like to have a good day at school but a bad day at home. Or a good day at home, a ...
